Strict Penalties Required to Discourage Uninsured Drivers
The Association of British Insurers (ABI), believe the reasons why uninsured drivers continue to use the roads is because the punishments are not strict enough.
A spokesperson for the body, Malcolm Tarling explained that the fines which are received by un-insured drivers are not strict enough to act as a deterrent. He further states that “In many cases the fine is less than the cost of insurance but there are far more effective penalties like taking away the vehicle and crushing it”. This adds a very different punishment to the driver as although you can drive without insurance it is much more difficult to drive without a car. He then continued to state that “Though fines can help to to tackle the issue of uninsured drivers, other measures should be introduced as well”.
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has around 400 insurance companies in membership, which equates to supplying 94% of the domestic insurance sold in the UK.
