Ruth Kelly Claims Expenses for Insured Flood Damage

The Telegraph has revealed in the latest round of expenses exposures that Ruth Kelly made a claim for flood damage to her North West home despite it being insured.

The newspaper has reported that the MP used second home allowances to cover over £30,000 of flood and water damage.  The damage was caused to various house appliances and to refurbish the property.

At the time of the claim the MP was a financial secretary at the Treasury.  Ms Kelly has stated that she believed the fixtures were to old to be covered by her home insurance policy but did say that she had not checked her policy to see if rebuilding work was covered.

It is normally the case that flood is covered under the terms of a standard home policy, although it is also normal for there to be a substantially higher excess.
