Lorry Crime on Increase
Lorry crime has almost doubled in the last twelve months increasing from just over 2000 incidents in 2007 to just over 4000 incidents in 2008.
The freight intelligence unit Truckpol have made it clear to the BBC that organised crime has targeted the freight industry. Truckpol state that the theft of large goods vehicles and their loads causes significant economic and logistical harm to manufacturers, operators and retailers alike.
The ongoing problem with the crime on the freight industry is costing the UK economy £250 million per year. Due to the attack on the freight industry many police forces are now focusing on lorry crime as a crime priority. A Freight Transport Association representative Don Armour added by stating with values of Lorries as high as £50,000 , they have become a juicy target for organized criminal operations, especially in areas with high levels of concentration and good motorway links”.
All hauliers need to ensure that they have effective HGV Insurance in place.
