Dr Paul Leinster the New Environment chief executive has urged the insurance industry to help those whose homes are at risk. Dr Paul Leinster states that “the annual cost of flooding could rise from present level of 1 bn to 25 bn by the year 2080.
To help minimise this cost Leinster further states that homes should be rebuilt, “measures such as waterproof plaster, solid floors and electrical fittings placed higher up the walls, will not only reduce damage but will mean people can be home faster”. A
lthough people should be taking responsibility to prepare for future floods Dr Paul Leinster also believes the insurance industry should be considering giving customers financial incentives, this could be reducing premiums and excesses if customers sign up for free flood warnings. The Association of British Insurers states that there are around 2 million homes at risk from costal or inland flooding and around 400,000 are at a very high risk.
