RENAULT CAR INSURANCE Building their first car in 1898 and introducing direct drive - effectively the first modern gearbox replacing chain and cog arrangements the Renault brothers were very much to the fore in the birth of the motor industry, and became the world's larget carmakers until the first world war. Having remained copetitive through the twenties and thirties Renault were nationalised by De Gaulle in 1946. Still part-owned by the French Government Renault's modern success really came with the Renault 5 - the first small hatchback. Since then they have gone from strength to strength producing a wide range of stylish and affordable cars. With ongoing involvement in Formula 1 racing and some involvement in the WRC rally series they have always had a strong motorsport presence. Renault pretty much invented the MPV when they brought out the Espace in the mid-eighties, and the modern version remains a best-seller in its field. In 1999 Renault bought a large stake in then-troubled Nissan, and although the companies have pledged to remain separate entities it will be interesting to see how they develop their future together (Nissan's van range already has more than a hint of France about it).
