Mitsubishi have been making cars in Japan since 1917 and bringing them to the UK since 1974. In 1982 they launched the Shogun to worldwide acclaim and competed a few months later in that year's Paris - Dakar rally taking best team award and eventually winning the rally outright two years later. Rally success has been central to Mitsubishi's image ever since with the Shogun clocking up an impressive 9 wins in the Paris-Dakar and a series of Galants gradually becoming the Evo series of WRC rally cars. Whilst their current range includes other models like the Colt supermini and the mid-range Carisma family car it is still the Evo and Shogun which spring to mind when Mitsubishi are mentioned. Since 2000 Mitsubishi have been in alliance with Daimler-Chrysler putting them in the top three automotive giants and opening their European factory in Holland for production of both Mercedes and Mitsubishi cars. It certainly can't hurt their reputation for reliability to be building Mercs.
