MAZDA CAR INSURANCE Mazda have always been slightly more eccentric than the other Japanese car manufacturers, both in terms of styling (the current RX-8 coupe with its rear-opening 'suicide doors' being a case in point) and engineering. Since their technical alliance with NSU in 1961 they have been champions of the rotary engine, and continue to develop it despite NSU's recent owners Audi dropping the technology. Mazda won the 1991 Le Mans endurance race with a rotary-engined car becoming the first Japanese car maker to win Le Mans and the only rotary-engined car ever to win. In 1979 Ford bought a 25% stake in Mazda and they have continued to work together since, with a couple of 'badge-engineered' models being produced by both companies, but mostly quite separate car ranges. Whilst the sporty rotary-engined RX-8 is the attention-grabber of the current line-up Mazda sell a full range of more conventional but still quirky cars in the UK. Insurance group ratings start at a lowly Group 2 for the 2-series but increase for faster and more expensive models. Browsing through the website at www.mazda.co.uk I found a video clip showing that the RX-8 coupe even eats traffic wardens, always a useful attribute in the city.
