A newcomer to the British market, Kia hail from Korea and have been in business for 60 years (though they only made bicycle parts originally) and have been producing cars since 1974. After falling victim to the collapse of the Asian 'Tiger economies' they were bought out by Korea's other major carmaker Hyundai in 1998 and are currently expanding quickly with a new European factory under construction in Slovakia. Kia might not have the most exciting range of cars - they currently sell small to medium sized hatchbacks and saloons alongside a large MPV called the Sedona and a full-size 4WD off-roader (Sorento) but the range is sold as cheap and cheerful, with the prices to back them up. In the same way as their owners Hyundai we can expect to see Kia selling more and more cars in the UK, both in their current niches for cheap MPVs and in the more general supermini class.
