Jeep started out in life as the Willy's Jeep (short for G.P. or General Purpose) utility vehicle created in 1941 for the American military. The company moved into civilian car manufacture with 1954s CJ5, a car which was in production until 1983 and is clearly similair to today's Wrangler models. Having gone through various hands over the years Jeep is now owned by Chrysler and produces three models, the Wrangler is pretty much the modern version of the original Willy's Jeep ( and for a while had a reputation a the gayest car in Britain - an honour apparently now held by the Smart car) whilst the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee fulfill the traditional role of American cars in their heavyweight, extras-loaded performance.

Since Jeep's owners Chrysler have merged with Mercedes one wonders if the next Grand Cherokee will look a little like a cheaper ML series Mercedes - a car which has proved itself popular with well-heeled British motorists. I somehow can't imagine a Mercedes badge finding its way onto a Wrangler though.
