Superquote Definitions / Glossary: Outbuilding

This term is important from an insurance perspective and effects many peoples home insurance contract.  Essentially an outbuilding is a structure which is seperate from the main dwelling but stands alone.

There are many things to be concious of when considering your outbuilding and whether it is adequately insured.  Please remember that from insurer to insurer the terms, excess, policy and handling of outbuildings will vary.

Building insurance - From a building insurance point of view, generally the outbuilding is insured as part of your home insurance, howver the sum insured needs to include the cost of the outbuilding.  If a claim occurs and the property as a whole is under-insured, then the principle of average may apply and you will not receive the full claim amount.

Contents - Generally a home contents policy will cover outbuildings but often the limit of cover is limited.  Many insurers only offer £300 / £500 of cover for outbuildings which may not be enough if you keep more valuable possessions there.

Working from home insurance - If you are an SME and work from home and in an outbuilding, then you almost certainly need a seperate policy to protect you, your outbuilding and the business.
