Superquote Glossary: Material Fact

Any piece of information which may influence the decision of an underwriter over the terms and cost of cover can be referred to as a material fact.

This is why they must be disclosed at the setting up of a policy and during the term of the contract.  Being open and honest about material facts is known as acting in upmost good faith.

Examples of material facts in car insurance are convictions, previous claims, modifications to the vehicle and the occupation of the insured.  It is imperative that when getting an insurance quote you disclose all material facts as failure to do so can expose you to claims being reduced, not paid or even the consequences of fraud.
