Many insurance providers will simply not offer banned drivers car insurance quotes.  Our partner has a number of providers that will and so it is certainly worth using their motor insurance quote system to see whether they can save you money on drink drive insurance.

Most UK bans are for drunk driving offences, although many others are for totting up for either a number of speeding offences or combinations of offences such as speeding (typically SP30, SP50 codes), driving without insurance (typically IN10 conviction code), driving without a licence (often an LC10 code) or convictions for driving without due care and attention (most often a CD10 code). You will need to declare each of the convictions that led to your totting up ban as well as fines, points and length of ban but then our partner will go to the market and see which insurance providers will be able to provide a quote for you. (Conviction codes are different in Northern Ireland).

Drink driving offences cause the most driving bans in the UK. The Legal Limit for drivers is 80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, often referred to as blood-alcohol concentration. In terms of breathalyser tests the limit for alcohol is 35 µg (micro grammes) per 100 ml, the limit for urine tests is 107 mg per 100 ml.  Click on the banner above and see if you can get a cheap drink drive insurance quote.

Typically these limits are the equivalent of two pints of normal beer for a male of normal weight. However the science is inexact and the only way to be sure you are not breaking the law is not to drink before driving. It is even possible for courts to take into account drink levels below the legal limit when reviewing the cause of an accident. For any offence of driving or attempting to drive while over the prescribed alcohol limit, there is a mandatory minimum sentence of one year's disqualification and after that a DR10 insurance quote is likely to add tyo your annual bills.

There are exceptions to this but they are rare, if you commit a drink driving offence it is almost certain to end in a disqualification which will certainly effect your car insurance. If you can demonstrate that you cannot earn an income without your licence or if you were driving as part of a medical emergency, these conditions may be taken into account by the court. Also possible, is the ability of a magistrate to extend the length of drink drive ban. This can happen with repeat offenders who have committed a drunken driving offence for the second time in a ten year period. The usual response to such offenders is a three year ban from driving.

Failing to produce a specimen is an offence often treated more seriously than simply being tested as over the limit. Often the length of disqualification a magistrate will give will be longer than for a driver simply tested as over the limit.

It is even possible to be banned from driving for being in charge of a vehicle. This can mean anything from fetching items from a car, pushing a car or sleeping in a car following drinking. These do not carry the same mandatory disqualification.

Please note that drink driving is now a criminal offence and so you may choose to talk to a specialist for home and business insurance, please see our ex offenders insurance page.

If you are banned for drink driving, often you can reduce the length of ban, by taking a rehabilitation course. They normally cost £200 - £300 and teach how drinking effects driving and generally aim to raise awareness with attendees.

Any driver banned from driving may find it harder to get competitive drink driving motor insurance.  Our partner can compare insurance quotes from providers who have specialist schemes for banned drivers.

The numbers of drivers caught for driving under the influence of drugs has increased in recent years.  Our partner has a panel of companies covering banned driver insurance on their quote engine that can provide drivers with insurance with drug driving convictions or IN10 car insurance.
