UK car insurance premiums are effected by a number of factors but one of the most significant is no claims discount.

In the first year a driver can earn in the region of a 40% discount if not making a claim under their policy. This level of no claims discount can escalate to 75% or even 80% for the most experienced (clean risk) drivers who have not made in a claim in six or more years.  When you reach that level of driving experience you can opt to protect your no claims discount which adds around 20% (generally) to your insurance premium but means that you are able to make a single claim (different insurers have different limits) and retain your discount for the following year.

However drivers without a no claims bonus can face a difficult task finding affordable quotes.  If you have experience driving a company car or van then often you can translate that into the equivalent of a no claim bonus. The same principle applies if you have been a named driver on someone elses policy. Many insurers offer the discount if you are a partner or spouse of the main driver. That is to say that if you have been driving on your husbands car insurance, or wifes car insurance, an insurer will recognise the experience and convert it into the equivalent of a no claim discount.

Some companies now even recognise the experience younger drivers have had on their parents policies, although this is rarer as insurers are very conscious of fronting, the process of fraudulently insuring a car in a more experienced drivers name to attain a cheaper premium for a higher risk driver.  Click here for information on whether you should insure a son on a parents policy (or daughter)

Younger drivers without a no claims bonus face much higher premiums as they are less able to demonstrate other driving experience. Building a no claims bonus is the fastest way to reduce your insurance costs because of the size of discount highlighted above.

No claims bonus scale

Most drivers do not understand what happens when you make a claim and lose discount. You, usually, do not automatically lose all of your bonus. Instead the general rule of thumb insurers apply is that you will not accrue any additional bonus for the year of insurance you are in and you will lose an extra two years. Each insurer has their own calculation for losing no claims bonus. This is a typical no claims bonus scale:

  • 1 year – 40% discount
  • 2 years – 50% discount
  • 3 years – 55% discount
  • 4 years – 60% discount
  • 5 years – 65% discount
  • 6+ years 70% discount

On this scale if a driver had three years of no claims bonus and made a claim in that year, he would not gain his third year and be ‘stepped back’ to a single year of bonus. Therefore they would not lose their entire discount.  Bear in mind that all insurers apply their own rules to no claims bonus.
